The Jembe, with its extraordinarily wide range of sonorities, its sophisticated polyrhythms and complex coded phrases, is surely one of Africa's most versatile instruments. Although, by many accounts, its ancient origin rests with the blacksmiths of the Malinke people, the Jembe is now ubiquitous throughout West Africa and plays a vital role in the rich traditions of many different ethnic groups. It is a featured participant in nearly all of the rituals, sacred and mundane, which punctuate and enrich life in the village
